Once in a while it’s good to shut off the brain drain a.k.a. TV and read some books. I still haven’t heard anyone tell me an awesome movie that they saw and then claim that it was better than the book. Running out of the house to get back to the ship I picked up Michener’s “Journey” and it turned out to be quit delightful. Tall tales and hearsay about hords of gold being found in the Yukon Valley (in Alaska that is) send thousands of unknowledgable people from across the globe off into the wilderness. Even the richest and most strong-hearted will attempt their hand. Ahh the arrogance of some people and how ironic it can be at times. Being so hard-headed as to never admit fail until all is lost…or maybe the knowledge at the end is well worth the life lessons learned. Shut off the tube and take a read. Hell tell me a good one to read.
Sailors can bicker just like little school girls about the most childish stuff. They will gang up on the weak link, crack jokes to get under each other’s skin, tattle tale and just flat out bitch. But at the end of the day these guys are some real old salts and the get down in the grit and get shit done.

(Yes that is crap on my camera and I have to take it in bc I can’t clean it off)
Have you ever heard of a place called Hopewell, VA? Perhaps a little piece of American History called the Civil War? Now does the name Appomattox Courthouse ring a bell? As big as the Civil War was, and the surrender marking the end to the bloodiest war to ever occur in American History, most people have no idea what Appomattox Courthouse even is. This is the place where Gen. Lee (Confederate General) surrendered the Southern Army to Gen. Grant (Union General) and ended the war officially. Well Hopewell, VA is just down the creek from this place. Forgotten, unbeknownst to most people, this little American town holds a Dollar General and your local corner store selling 85% of items revenue as cigarretes and alcohol. Hard lifes, hard drinking, and hard smoking makes for some worn people, but by God are they proud to be American.
I went on a stroll this morning off the ship for a few miles through town and snapped a few for ya…
I NEVER thought that I would see this. And the whole time we thought he was from Mexico, but his family is right here in Virginia of all places. They were probably servants for the Union tyrants.

Ah yes the cliche self portrait in glass.

The adventure at sea or more commonly known “Sea Venture.” With a good dock location I managed to get into downtown Charleston and walk around after dinner. I only had my little point and shoot so it wasn’t anything special. The B&W fit with the overcast skies and strong S’ly windsthat made it gloomy anyways.

I ran across this project one time before and it just didn’t set in. Think for a minute how many of those bottles you have seemlessly thrown away. They will never go away…they must accumulate somewhere. Buy a filter, drink water from a glass….you may not think your little change helps, but we all add up. Open your eyes for a minute and do your part.
To get a better grasp check out the whole project HERE and see what Chris Jordan can show you.
Now even I am not that old to really remember the thrill of mixtapes. By the time I was old enough to appreciate music and fiddle with that, the beauty of burned CD’s had arrived. But this site lets you take it back old skool style. You can make your own mixtapes or just listen to others people made. Dabble around and you can find some good tunes to jam. Go make yourself one at muxtape.com
After getting back to work on April 10, as always it takes me a few days to actually get settled and accustomed to life on the ship. But once that happened I was good to go again in my routine life at sea. Just a few snaps of what I felt like the first few days….I know its late but I didn’t have wireless.
Port Everglades..seems like a vacation but its just day 1 of work
almost like prison…The Sea Venture what a ship
